Why We Wrote Macie and the Magic Dirt

Stories have a unique power to inspire action, especially when they’re grounded in real-world experiences. That’s why Ericka Leigh and I co-authored “Macie and the Magic Dirt.” We wanted to take the concept of composting—something that often feels abstract—and make it tangible and exciting for little ones and their families.

By bringing the concept of “Waste to WOW!” to life, we crafted a journey that kids can see, touch, and connect with, inspiring them to explore how small actions, like composting, can lead to big change.

Here are the key lessons at the heart of the story:

Waste to WOW! – Macie learns how everyday waste—from kitchen scraps to old cotton clothes—can transform into life-giving soil, showing that waste isn’t the end of the story.

Composting Basics – Through Farmer Lundyn’s guidance , we simplify composting into actionable steps, making it fun and accessible for families to start their own composting adventures.

Sustainable Living – The book celebrates the cycle of nature and teaches families practical ways to reduce waste and contribute to a healthier planet.

Tiny Actions, Big Impact – The core message: even small, everyday actions can create meaningful change, starting right in your backyard.

This story will be more than just a book—it invites families to reconnect with the magic beneath their feet and discover how to create a more sustainable world.
