🌱 Food is Medicine—A Growing Conversation
This week at Access to Fresh, we’ve been buzzing with conversations about Food is Medicine, and it got me reflecting on the future of our food and healthcare systems—especially as my granddaughter, Macie, grows older.
Looking at the fresh lettuce thriving in our Tower Garden, I envision a future where food, nutrition, and healthcare blend into a seamless, holistic system—rooted in prevention, powered by data, and deeply personal.
The Food is Medicine pyramid, along with the insights from the Tufts Food & Nutrition Innovation Institute, provides a helpful way to think about how we get there.
At the foundation are the community-based programs and policies that increase access to healthy food—things like nutrition incentives and produce prescription programs. Higher up are more targeted interventions, such as medically tailored groceries and meals for individuals with specific health conditions. At the very top sits personalized nutrition—where healthcare providers use tech, data, and AI to help individuals make food choices tailored precisely to their health needs.
Of course, none of this happens in isolation—it requires enabling systems that foster collaboration across healthcare, food access, and public policy. That’s where the real power of partnership comes in—and it’s exactly what’s fueling our Food Hub vision.
For now, Macie happily gives her veggies “check-ups” with her toy stethoscope. But G’Pa here believes we’re on the edge of a profound shift toward healthier, happier lives and communities—and I couldn’t be more excited to be working with like-minded folks to help make it happen. 💚
